Hey everyone! Today I’m going to review the Turkey Towel Topper pattern by Maggie Weldon. This pattern leaves you with a cute turkey design that is perfect for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. I only made a few changes to fit my needs for the pattern. This pattern can be found here.
TURKEY TOWEL TOPPER PATTERN REVIEW
To make this towel topper, you will need worsted weight yarn and a size H-8 crochet hook. I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn in burgundy, tan, dark brown, gold, and café latte (medium brown). I also used a Clover Amour hook, which I can’t say enough good things about them. You can purchase this hook here. You will need some wiggly eyes in order to complete this project as well. I purchased mine on Amazon.
You will start making the turkey feathers first. This might seem like a difficult concept when first looking at the photos, but it’s actually quite easy. With each color, you’re doing two rounds, one with double crochets and the other with chain stitches. I couldn’t believe how easy this pattern ended up being.
Once you finish the turkey feathers, you will start making the turkey head and neck. In the original pattern, you’re instructed to use plastic canvas, but I opted out of it. I felt like the pattern worked well on its own without the aid of the plastic canvas.
PATTERN ADJUSTMENTS
I also decided to make a different holder than the tie the pattern mentioned. Instead, I attached my medium brown yarn in the back of top of the towel topper and made 5 scs across. Then I chained 1 and made 1 sc across. I did this for 24 rows. Next, I chained 1, sc in the first two scs, ch 1 and skip next sc, and made 1 sc in the last 2 scs. This is for the buttonhole. For the final row, I made 1 sc into each st across including the ch-1 space.
Another thing I included as a loop in the back of the turkey towel topper. I wanted to have a loop in back in order to change out the towels. By having this loop, you are able to do just that. To make this loop, you will chain 26. Make a sc in the 2nd chain from your hook and in each stitch across. Fasten off. See below for placement of towel loop.
OVERALL IMPRESSION
I really enjoyed making the Turkey Towel Topper pattern. The pattern was well written and I had a lot of fun making this. This pattern doesn’t require a lot of yarn, so you can make multiple turkeys using one skein of each of the colors.
