Suzette Baby Hat Pattern

Hi everyone! Today I’m sharing my newest crochet pattern, the Suzette Baby Hat. I had an overwhelming positive response to my Suzette Baby Blanket with some requesting a matching hat. I am very appreciative of your support, so I knew I had to make a hat to go along with my blanket. If you missed the blanket pattern, click here for the video tutorial.

The Suzette Baby Hat is made using lightweight yarn in a self-striping pattern. However, this hat would be pretty in just about every color combination out there. The possibilities are truly endless!

This hat can be made in any size by following the chart below. You can also choose to add a pom on top if you so choose. Don’t want to use lightweight yarn? You can use any yarn you’d like, you just need to follow along with the chart to get your desired size.

If you end up making this hat, please share your finished product by tagging me on Instagram using the hashtag #amandacrochets. I’d love to see what other colors you come up with for inspiration!

For the Suzette Baby Hat, I used Caron Skinny Cakes in Buttermints. However, you can use whatever weight yarn you’d like by using the recommended hook on your yarn label. I also used a size H-8 (5mm) crochet hook. I highly recommend using my favorite crochet hooks, Clover Amour. You will also need a tapestry needle, measuring tape, and a pair of scissors. Gather your supplies and let’s begin!

Suzette Baby Hat

Materials:

Size:

Newborn-3 Months (more sizes available below)

Notes:

  • This hat is worked from the bottom up.
  • You will make the brim of your hat 2 inches shorter than your head size. When you stretch out the brim, it should measure your desired head size. The brim must have an even number of rows for this pattern to work.
  • When you see parenthesis, you will work this in the same stitch.
  • Turn your hat after each row.
  • You can use any yarn you’d like for this hat. You will use the coordinating hook to go along with your yarn (check the yarn label) and follow the chart below for the size you need.

Suzette Baby Hat Pattern:

NEWBORN-3 MONTH SIZE (I used #3 lightweight yarn for the pattern below. In the video tutorial, I used #4 worsted weight yarn. The pattern is the same regardless of the yarn you use)

CH 8

Row 1: SC in 2nd CH and in each CH across. CH 1 and turn.

Row 2: SC in both loops of 1st stitch, SC in BLO of next 5 stitches, SC in both loops of last stitch. CH 1 and turn.

You will repeat Row 2 until your brim measures 2 inches less than your head size. For my hat, I ended up making a total of 40 rows, which ended up being 11 inches.

Next, to close up the brim, you will SC both ends together. Flip this inside out so the seam is inside your hat. You will now be working on the hat height.

Hat Height:

Round 1: CH 1 and SC evenly around your hat. You should end up with an even number of stitches. For me, I ended up making 40 SC around (1 per row). SL ST to beginning SC. CH 1 and turn.

Round 2: Skip 1st stitch, (SC, DC) in next stitch, *skip a stitch, (SC, DC) in next stitch. Repeat around. SL ST to beginning. CH 1 and turn.

Repeat Round 2 until your hat measures your desired height (refer to chart). For my hat, I did 13 rounds total.

When you’ve reached your desired height, you will leave a long tail to sew up the top of your hat. To do so, you will weave your yarn needle in and out of the tops of the stitches. Next, pull gently until the top of your hat closes up. Weave in your end so the hat stays shut. Fasten off. You can add an optional pom if you would like to your hat.

Thank you so much for joining me today as I share my Suzette Baby Hat pattern with you. I hope you enjoyed making this adorable baby hat. This would be a great to go along with my Suzette Baby Blanket. Let me know in the comments below if you plan on making this hat or what you’re currently working on. I’d love to hear from you!
