Hi everyone! Today I’m sharing with you my newest crochet pattern, the Shell Stitch Dishcloth. This is going to be part of my Dishcloth Series, where every Saturday in June I’ll be sharing a new dishcloth pattern. The Shell Stitch Dishcloth is a great beginner-friendly crochet pattern that can be made in a variety of colors or even just a solid color.
The Shell Stitch Dishcloth is made using Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton in Ivory, Taupe, and Warm Blush. However, you can use any cotton yarn you have in your yarn stash. This dishcloth is great to use up leftover yarn. I also used a size H-8 crochet hook. My favorite crochet hooks to use are the Clover Amour. You will also need a pair of scissors and a tapestry needle. Gather your supplies and let’s begin!
SHELL STITCH DISHCLOTH
Materials:
- (1) skein each of I Love This Cotton in Taupe, Ivory, and Warm Blush
- H-8 crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Size:
10×10
Notes:
- You can change up the sizing of this dishcloth by making a multiple of 6. Once satisfied, you will add 1 more chain to the end.

Pattern:
With Warm Blush, ch37
Row 1: 2dc in 4th ch from hook, *skip 2chs, 1sc in next stitch, skip 2chs, 5dcs in next stitch. Repeat from * until you have 3chs remaining. Skip 2 chains and make a sc in the last ch. Ch3 and turn.
Row 2: 2dc in first sc from previous row, *skip 2 stitches and sc in next stitch (3rd dc from shell cluster in previous row), skip 2 stitches, 5dcs in next sc. Repeat from * across. Make a sc in the top of the ch3 turning ch. Ch3 and turn.
Rows 3-20: Repeat Row 2, alternating colors every 3 rows if desired.
Last Row (even out the top of shells): ch3 (counts as dc), *hdc in 1st dc of the 5dc cluster, sc in next 3dcs, hdc in last dc of the cluster, dc into the sc. Repeat from * across to the end of the row. You will end with 1sc in the last 2 stitches. Fasten off and proceed to border.
*If you’re using the same color, do not fasten off and proceed to the border.
Border:
Join color and ch2 (ch2 does not count as a stitch). Make a hdc evenly around the entire dishcloth, making sure to work 3hdcs in each corner. Join to beginning hdc with a sl st. (Note: if you’re using the same color for the mini shell edging, ch2 and continue to mini shell edging.)
Mini Shell Edging:
- Join next color in any corner and ch2 (ch2 does not count as a stitch).
- 4hdcs in 1st stitch, *skip 1 stitch, sc in next stitch, skip 1 stitch, 4hdcs in next stitch. Repeat from * around entire dishcloth.
- Fasten off and weave in all ends.
