Orchid Bloom Baby Blanket

Hi everyone! Today I’m sharing my newest crochet pattern, the Orchid Bloom Baby Blanket. This super soft, handmade baby blanket is a two row repeat pattern and has a wonderful texture. It is the perfect baby afghan for a newborn baby and would also be an excellent baby shower gift that would be treasured for years to come.

For the Orchid Bloom Baby Blanket, I used Premier Basix DK. However, you can use whatever lightweight #3 weight yarn you’d like. I also used a size K-10.5 (6.5mm) crochet hook. I highly recommend using my favorite crochet hooks, Clover Amour. You will also need a tapestry needle and a pair of scissors. Gather your supplies and let’s begin!

Materials:

Size:

32×32 with border

29×29 without border

Notes:

  • This blanket is worked in a multiple of 2. This means your chain will be an even number.
  • The chain stitches do not count as a stitch.
  • Whenever you see parenthesis, you will follow the instructions inside the parenthesis into the stitch indicated.
  • Your last row should end with a Row 2 to match the beginning of your blanket.

Row 2: DC in first stitch and in each stitch across, CH 1 and turn (93 DC)

Row 3: (SC, DC) in first stitch, *skip the next stitch and in the stitch after that (SC, DC). Repeat from * until you have 2 stitches remaining. Skip 1 stitch and SC in the final stitch, CH 2 and turn (93 stitches)

Rows 4-66: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 for entire blanket. Do not fasten off as we will continue making the border in the same color.

Blanket Border

Border Round 1:

(Side Down): CH 1, working down the side, SC evenly working into the row end stitches. (Work 1 SC into the top of the DC and 1 SC into the bottom of the DC. Work 1 SC into the SC/CH-1.)

(Bottom): In the first CH across the bottom, make 3 SC (corner made), SC in each CH across, 3 SC in last CH (corner made)

(Side Up): Working up the side, SC evenly working into the row end stitches (same as other side)

(Top): 3 SC in first stitch (corner made), SC in each stitch across, 3 SC in last stitch (corner made). SL ST to first SC to join.  CH 1 and turn.

Border Round 2: SC in next stitch and in each stitch around. You will work 3 SC in each corner space (middle of the 3 SC made from previous round), SL ST to the first SC to join. CH 1 and turn.

Rounds 3-5: Repeat Round 2

Round 6: In the next stitch (SC, DC), *skip 1 stitch and in the stitch after that (SC, DC). Repeat around entire blanket. (Nothing special happens at the corners). Your last stitch remaining should be a (SC, DC). SL ST to beginning stitch. Fasten off and weave in your ends.

(If you don’t have the right number of stitches, don’t skip a stitch before the last stitch. If you find it to be a little too bulky, make either 1 SC or 1 DC in the final stitch.)
