Hey everyone! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to make the uneven berry stitch. This is a variation on the Even Berry Stitch, which I showed you how to do last week. The uneven berry stitch is built from a foundation row of single crochet and has four pattern row repeats. This results in the berry stitches offsetting each other.
For today’s tutorial, you will need worsted weight yarn (I’m using Red Heart Super Saver) and a size I-9 crochet hook (I’m using Clover Amour). I recommend using a solid color versus a variegated color in order to see the stitch definition more clearly. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!
To begin your foundation chain, you will need to make an even number of chains. For the purposes of this tutorial, I am making 26 chains.
ROW 1: Make a single crochet in the 3rd chain from your hook. Continue making 1 single crochet in each chain across. Chain 1 and turn.
ROW 2: Skip the first single crochet and *make a berry stitch in the next single crochet. To make a berry stitch, yarn over your hook and insert into the next stitch.
Next, yarn over and pull through a loop. Yarn over and insert back into the same stitch.
Finally, yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on your hook. Chain 1, which will help secure your berry stitch.
Make a slip stitch in the next single crochet. Repeat from * to the end, making sure to work a slip stitch in the turning chain. Chain 1 and turn.
ROW 3: Skip the first stitch and *make a slip stitch in the top of the berry stitch. Next, make a single crochet in the next slip stitch. Repeat from * to the end of the row. Chain 1 and turn.
ROW 4: *Make a slip stitch in the next slip stitch. Next, make a berry stitch in the next single crochet, slip stitch in next slip stitch. Repeat from * to last stitch, making a slip stitch in the last stitch. Chain 1 and turn.
ROW 5: Skip the first stitch. *Make 1 single crochet in next slip stitch, slip stitch in top of berry stitch. Repeat from * to end. Chain 1 and turn.
That’s how to make the uneven berry stitch! Repeat rows 2-5 over and over again to practice. The uneven berry stitch might require some practice at first, but the more you practice, the easier it will become. Use this stitch to create some fun texture in blankets or scarves.
