Hey everyone! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to make the tulip stitch. This stitch is made with clusters of double crochets that offset against each other. The tulip stitch is quick to work up as it only requires one repeat row. Suited for larger projects, such as blankets, the tulip stitch looks great worked in multiple colors to form stripes.
For today’s tutorial, you will need worsted weight yarn (I’m using Red Heart Super Saver) and a size I-9 crochet hook (I’m using Clover Amour). The tulip stitch looks great in a solid color, but feel free to change colors for a more interesting look. Learn how to change colors here. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!

To begin, you will need a multiple of 4 plus 5 more for the foundation chain. For the purposes of this tutorial, I am making 17 chains.
ROW 1: Make 3 double crochets in the 5th chain from your hook.
Skip 3 chains and make 1 single crochet in the next chain.
*Chain 3 and make 3 double crochets in same chain as the single crochet. Skip 3 chains and make 1 single crochet into the next chain. Repeat from * to the end. Chain 4 and turn.
ROW 2: Make 3 double crochets in the 1st chain of the chain-4.
Skip [1 single crochet, 3 double crochets] and make 1 single crochet into the chain-3 space.
*Chain 3 and make 3 double crochets in the same chain space as the last single crochet. Skip [1 single crochet, 3 double crochets] and make 1 single crochet in the chain-3 space. Repeat from * and work 1 single crochet under the chain 4. Chain 4 and turn.
That’s how to make the tulip stitch! Repeat row 2 over and over again to practice. The tulip stitch might require some practice at first, but the more you practice, the easier it will become. Use this stitch to create some fun texture in your next crochet project.
