Hey everyone! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to make the sprig stitch. This stitch is made using chains and single crochets. When worked up in a project, the sprig stitch is a firm, dense pattern that’s closely related to fans and shells.
For today’s tutorial, you will need worsted weight yarn (I’m using Red Heart Super Saver) and a size I-9 crochet hook (I’m using Clover Amour). The sprig stitch looks great in a solid color, but feel free to change colors for a more interesting look. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!
To begin, you will need a multiple of 4+2 plus 1 more for the foundation chain. For the purposes of this tutorial, I am making 19 chains.
ROW 1: Make 2 single crochets in the 4th chain from hook.
Chain 2 and make 2 single crochet in next chain.
Next, *skip 2 chains, 2 single crochets in next chain, chain 2, 2 single crochets in next chain. Repeat from * to last 2 chains. Skip 1 chain and make a single crochet in the last chain. Chain 3 and turn.
ROW 2: Make [2 single crochets, chain 2, 2 single crochets] in each chain-2 space, ending with 1 single crochet in the turning chain. Chain 3 and turn.
That’s how to make the sprig stitch! Repeat row 2 over and over again to practice. The sprig stitch might require some practice at first, but the more you practice, the easier it will become. Use this stitch to create some fun texture in your next crochet project.
