Hey everyone! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to make the spider stitch. I thought this stitch would be appropriate as we are in October. This stitch is based on pairings that are split on either side of a single chain. The end result is a very dense pattern. The spider stitch is made up of chains and single crochets.
For today’s tutorial, you will need worsted weight yarn (I’m using Red Heart Super Saver) and a size I-9 crochet hook (I’m using Clover Amour). I recommend using a solid color versus a variegated color in order to see the stitch definition more clearly. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!
To begin your foundation chain, you will need to make an odd number of chains plus 2 more at the end. For the purposes of this tutorial, I am making 29.
ROW 1: Single crochet, chain 1, single crochet all in the 3rd chain from your hook.
*Skip 1 chain and make a single crochet, chain 1, single crochet in the next chain. Repeat from * until you reach the last two chains. Skip one chain and make 1 single crochet in last chain. Chain 2 and turn.
ROW 2: *Make a single crochet, chain 1, single crochet in the chain-1 space from the previous row Repeat from * to the end of the row. Make 1 single crochet in the top of the turning chain.
That’s how to make the spider stitch! Repeat row 2 over and over again to practice. Again, this is a dense pattern using two basic stitches. Feel free to use this stitch to make cowls, scarves, or even blankets for the upcoming winter season.
