Hey everyone! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to make the grit stitch. This is a beginner-friendly stitch using two basic crochet stitches: the single crochet and the double crochet. The grit stitch is one of those stitches that require little thinking once you get the hang of it. This is a softly textured stitch that would work well for a variety of different-sized projects. The end result looks beautiful!
For today’s tutorial, you will need worsted weight yarn (I’m using Red Heart Super Saver) and a size I-9 crochet hook (I’m using Clover Amour). I recommend using a solid color in order to see the stitch definition more clearly. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!
To begin, you will need to make a multiple of 2+1, plus 2 more for the foundation chain. For the purposes of this tutorial, I am making a chain of 19.
Next, skip the first 2 chains (counts as first single crochet) and make a double crochet into the 3rd chain.
*Skip the next chain and make 1 single crochet and 1 double crochet in the same chain. Repeat from * to last two chains. Skip the next chain and make 1 single crochet in the last chain. Chain 1 and turn.
The chain 1 counts as a single crochet. Make 1 double crochet into the first stitch.
*Skip next double crochet and make 1 single crochet and 1 double crochet into the next single crochet from previous row. Repeat from * to last two stitches. Skip the double crochet from the previous row and make 1 single crochet in the last stitch. Chain 1 and turn.
That’s how to make the grit stitch! Repeat that last row over and over again to practice. This is such a simple stitch that I’m positive you will fall in love with it just like I did! If you’re interested in making a pattern using the grit stitch, stay tuned until next Saturday where I will release a free pattern.
