Hey everyone! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to make the diagonal shell stitch. This stitch is an extension of the tulip stitch, which I showed you how to do last week. However, the diagonal shell stitch is a little more intricate as we’re adding more paired stitches into the top of the shells. This stitch is also worked over two rows as opposed to one row. Each shell is made up of a single crochet, 3 chains, and 4 double crochets, which enables them to be on a diagonal.
For today’s tutorial, you will need worsted weight yarn (I’m using Red Heart Super Saver) and a size I-9 crochet hook (I’m using Clover Amour). The diagonal shell stitch looks great in a solid color, but feel free to change colors for a more interesting look. Learn how to change colors here. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!

To begin, you will need a multiple of 5 plus 2 more for the foundation chain. That means your multiple will be 5+5+5 until your desired length and add 2 more chains onto the very end. For the purposes of this tutorial, I am making 22 chains.
ROW 1: Make 1 shell [1 single crochet, chain 3, 4 double crochets] all in the 2nd chain from your hook.
*Skip 3 chains and make 1 shell in the next chain. Repeat from * to last 4 chains, skip 3 chains and work 1 single crochet into the very last chain. Chain 3 and turn. (Chain 3 counts as a double crochet)
ROW 2: *Skip first double crochet and double crochet 2 together over the next 2 stitches.
Chain 3 and skip 1 double crochet. Make 1 single crochet in the chain-3. Repeat from * to the end of the row. Chain 1 and turn.
ROW 3: Make 1 shell in 1st stitch.
*Skip chain 3 and next stitch, and make 1 shell in the next single crochet. Repeat from * ending with 1 single crochet in the top of the turning chain. Chain 3 and turn.
That’s how to make the diagonal shell stitch! Repeat row 2 and 3 over and over again to practice. The diagonal shell stitch might require some practice at first, but the more you practice, the easier it will become. Use this stitch to create some fun texture in your next crochet project.
