Hey everyone! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to make the crab stitch. This is a popular stitch that you would use as a border around a project. The crab stitch is also known as the reverse single crochet stitch. Basically, this means you are going backwards to create this stitch. I have to admit that I was a little intimidated at first, but once you get the hang out it, it really is a very easy stitch to do.
For today’s tutorial, you will need worsted weight yarn (I’m using Red Heart Super Saver) and a size I-9 crochet hook (I’m using Clover Amour). I recommend using a solid color versus a variegated color in order to see the stitch definition more clearly. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!
Before beginning, you will need a swatch or a project to practice the crab stitch on. To make a swatch, chain 20, sc in 2nd stitch from hook and in each stitch across. Chain 1 and turn. Continue making your sc rows until you have a square to work with.
Using the same color, you will chain up 1. If you are using a different color, you will join the new color to the top of the first stitch on your left and chain 1.
Next, take your hook and insert it into the stitch to your right (normally you would insert your hook in the left stitch). This may feel very strange at first, but stick with it!
Once your hook is in the stitch to the right, adjust your hand position and pull through the working yarn. I found it easier to have the hook facing downwards and grabbing onto the working yarn rather than doing a yarn over your hook.
Next, you will now have two loops on your hook. You will then yarn over your hook and pull through the two loops. This completes your first crab stitch.
Turn your hook backwards and insert it into the next stitch to the right. Complete steps 3-5 all the way around your project.
That’s how to make the crab stitch! This stitch may require some practice, but once you get the hang out it, you will end up loving it just like I did. Use the crab stitch to complete baby blankets, sweaters, hats, scarves, and more!
