How to Make the Chevron Stitch

Hey everyone! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to make the chevron stitch. This has to be one of my all-time favorite stitches! This is a beautiful wavy stitch using the double crochet stitch. There are a few ways to make the chevron stitch, but we’re going to focus on this simple chevron stitch for this tutorial. The chevron stitch is one of those stitches that might require a little concentration at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’ll become easier. For this tutorial, you’ll be making a double crochet increase as well as a double crochet decrease. This results in a beautiful wavy pattern.

For today’s tutorial, you will need worsted weight yarn (I’m using Red Heart Super Saver) and a size I-9 crochet hook (I’m using Clover Amour). I recommend using a solid color in order to see the stitch definition more clearly. However, if you want to change it up and use multiple colors, go right ahead! Check out my lesson where I teach you how to change colors. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!

To begin, you will need a multiple of 10 +1. Then you will need to add 3 more to the end of your chain. For the purposes of this tutorial, I will be making a chain of 34.

Next, you will make a 2 double crochets into the 4th chain from the hook.

Make one double crochet into the next 3 chains.

Next, you will make a double crochet decrease over the next 3 chains. To do this, wrap the yarn over your hook, insert it into the chain and pull up a loop. You will have 3 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through two loops. Yarn over, insert your hook into the next chain, and pull up a loop. Next, yarn over and pull through first two loops on hook. Yarn over, insert your hook into the next chain, and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through first two loops on hook. Finally, yarn over and pull through last remaining 4 loops.

Make one double crochet into the next 3 chains.

You will make 3 double crochets in the next chain. This will be your increase.

Continue this pattern by making one double crochet in the next 3 chains, double crochet decrease, one double crochet in the next 3 chains, double crochet increase until the end. You should end with one double crochet in the next 3 chains. Make 2 double crochets in last chain. Chain 3 and turn.

Make 1 double crochet into the first stitch. The chain 3 counts as a double crochet. Work the pattern as mentioned above, which will create the chevron effect.

That’s how to make the chevron stitch! You are basically building the same stitches on top of one another. Once you get the hang of this repeat pattern, I’m positive you will fall in love with it just like I did!  If you’re interested in making a pattern using the chevron stitch, I recommend this free baby blanket pattern:  Radiating Ripple Throw
