Hey everybody! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to make a triple crochet stitch. This is the next tallest stitch after the double crochet. In this lesson, I will go over how to make a triple crochet (also known as a treble crochet) stitch step-by-step and include pictures to help you along the way. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!

To begin, you first need to start out with a slip knot and chain. If you don’t know how to make a slip knot or chain, please check out my previous lesson before continuing. You will start with 25 chains.

To begin making a triple crochet (or treble crochet; tr), count four chains from your hook. Remember the loop on your hook never counts. To continue, yarn over your hook twice and insert into that fourth chain.

Next, yarn over your hook and pull through that chain you just went through. You will now have four loops on your hook.

Wrap the yarn around your hook and pull through the first two chains on your hook. Three loops will remain. Wrap the yarn around your hook and pull through the next two chains on your hook.

To complete the tr stitch, yarn over your hook one more time and pull through both loops on your hook. This completes your first tr.

To finish the row, yarn over your hook twice and insert it into the next chain making another triple crochet as mentioned above. Continue making triple crochets into each chain across. This completes your first row. You should have a total of 23 tr stitches. The four chains you skipped at the beginning count as one tr.

To continue onto the next row, chain four and turn your work. Skip the first triple crochet stitch from the previous row. Yarn over your hook twice, insert your hook into the second stitch and begin making your triple crochet into this stitch. Continue making a tr in each stitch across. Be careful not to miss the last stitch of the row as sometimes this can be hard to see. Continue making each row in the same fashion.

Your tension might be all over the place as a beginner, so your stitches might be a little too tight or a little too loose in some cases. For now, focus on making the triple crochet stitch correctly and your tension will even itself out eventually. The more you practice, the better your stitches will become.
