Hey everyone! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to make a half double crochet stitch. This is the next tallest stitch after the single crochet stitch. In this lesson, I will go over how to make the half double crochet stitch step-by-step and include pictures for you to follow along the way. Grab your supplies and let’s get started!

To begin, you first need to start with a slip knot and chain. If you don’t know how to make a slip knot or chain, please check out my previous lesson before continuing. You will start with 20 chains.

To begin making a half double crochet (hdc), count two chains from your hook. The loop on your hook never counts. Wrap yarn around your hook and insert into the second chain.

Next, yarn over your hook and pull through that chain you just went through. You will now have three loops on your hook.

To complete the hdc stitch, yarn over your hook more time and pull through all three loops on your hook. This completes your first hdc.

To finish the row, yarn over your hook and insert it into the next chain making another hdc as mentioned above. Continue making hdcs into each chain across. This completes your first row. You should have 20 hdc stitches. The two chains you skipped at the beginning count as one hdc.

To continue onto the next row, chain two and turn your work. Skip the first hdc stitch from the previous row. Yarn over your hook, insert your hook into the second stitch and begin making your hdc into this stitch. Continue making a hdc in each stitch across. Be careful not to miss the last stitch of the row as sometimes this can be hard to see. Continue making each row in the same fashion.

Your tension might be all over the place as a beginner, so your stitches might be a little too tight or a little too loose in some cases. For now, focus on making the hdc stitch correctly and your tension will even itself out eventually. The more you practice, the better your stitches will become.
