Hey everybody! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to make a granny square. A granny square is one of those classic patterns in crochet that I believe everyone should learn. Some might consider them old fashioned, but there are so many modern projects using granny squares that I’m sure you’ll fall in love with. With this lesson, I have step-by-step instructions on how to make a granny square. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!

To begin, make a magic loop and chain up 3. The chain 3 will count as your first double crochet here and for the start of each round.

You can also chain 4, slip stitch to first chain to form a loop, and chain 3. Use whichever method you prefer.

You will make the following all inside the loop: 2 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet, chain 2. Next, slip stitch in the top of the chain 3. Tug gently on the tail to close up the center loop. You can weave in this tail at the end.

Next, slip stich into the next two chains as well as into that corner chain 2 space. For each round, you’ll need to slip stitch over to the corner space to begin. Next, chain 3.

You will make the following all in the corner chain 2 space: 2 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets, chain 1. You may need to push your work over to the side in order to get all those stitches into the corner space. Do this in each of the 3 remaining corner spaces. Slip stitch to the beginning chain 3.

Again, slip stitch in the next two double crochets and into the corner space. Chain 3. Next, work a corner as follows: 2 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets, chain 1.

You now have an extra space before you reach your next corner. This is called the side of the granny square. In the next space, you want to make 3 double crochets and chain 1.

For your next corner, make 3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets all in that same corner space. Chain 1 and make 3 double crochets in the next space. Make your final corner the same way: 3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets. Finally, chain 1 and slip stitch to the top of your chain 3 from the beginning.

Feel free to continue making each round in the same fashion. Remember to slip stitch to the corner first. In each corner you’ll make 3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets. In each chain 1 space, you’ll make 3 double crochets and chain 1.

If you want to change colors, simply finish the round with one color and slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain 3. Cut off a yarn tail of about 6 inches. Next, get your new color and start in any of the corner spaces. It’s that easy!

That’s how to make a granny square! This technique may require some practice at first, but you end up with a cool design. It can also be quite addicting once you get the hang of it. Take your time with it so you understand exactly how to make a granny square.
