Hey everybody! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to make a back post double crochet. A back post stitch means that it’s raised crochet stitches on the opposite or back side of your work that’s not facing you. This is a great way to give your work some interest by using this technique to make ridges in your work. With this lesson, I have step-by-step instructions on how to make a back post double crochet. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!
To begin, let’s start with 25 chains. You will work 1 double crochet into the second chain from your hook and in each chain across. Click here for my double crochet lesson. Next, you want to chain up 2, which will count as your first double crochet.
Yarn over and insert your hook from the back to the front between the posts of the first and second double crochet of the row below and again from front to back between the second and third double crochet. Your hook should be positioned horizontally in front of the double crochet that you’re working on.
Next, yarn over and draw the loop around the post of the stitch. You should have 3 loops on your hook.
To complete the back post double crochet, yarn over and draw through the first two loops. Two loops remain.
Yarn over and draw through the remaining two loops on your hook. Basically, you are making a double crochet, but instead you’re working around the post instead of at the top of the stitch.
Continue making a back post double crochet until you get to the end of your row. Below is what your first row would look like.
If you were to alternate a front post double crochet and a back post double crochet, here’s what it would look like:
That’s how to make a back post double crochet! This technique may require some practice at first, but the end result is beautiful! It really gives your work some texture to it. Stay tuned until next week where I will release a pattern using the front post and back post double crochet stitches.
