How to Keep Stitches Even

There are a few things you can try to help with tension as well as how to keep stitches even. If you’re new to the world of crochet, you might notice your stitches are all over the place.

When starting as a beginner, you haven’t mastered your tension yet, so your stitches may come out too tight or too loose. Even if you’re an experienced crocheter, your stress level can change the way your stitches come out. However, don’t give up! Read my tips on how to keep your stitches even.

The first thing is lots of practice!

The more you crochet, the more comfortable you’ll feel holding the crochet hook and yarn for your projects. As a beginner, you may think crocheting isn’t very relaxing and is actually more stressful than anticipated. However, once you get over the awkward stage of holding the yarn and crochet hook as well as learn the basic stitches, you’ll find crocheting is quite relaxing (and addictive!).

Another thing to try is watching how experienced crocheters hold their yarn and crochet hook. Everyone has a different way of doing this, so find which way works best for you. If you don’t have any friends or family members that crochet, try watching various crocheters on YouTube to see which way you like the best.

Try out different sized crochet hooks to see if your tension improves.

When I first learned how to crochet, I used an F-3.75mm crochet hook for everything. I never thought to use different sized crochet hooks even though I knew bigger crochet hooks existed. Looking back, I probably should have used a bigger hook because it would have helped me see the stitches easily. The bigger the hook, the bigger the stitches will be. The same goes for a small hook and smaller stitches. When starting out, you may notice your stitches are too tight. Try switching to a bigger hook. If your stitches are too loose, try switching to a smaller hook. Using only one hook can limit your options for finding a solution to your tension problem.

There you have it! I hope these tips help you on your journey to learning how to crochet and how to keep stitches even. Remember, the more you practice, the more you’ll get the hang of it and your stitches will come out even. Enjoy the process of crochet and you’ll be a natural in no time!
