Hey everybody! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to crochet in the round. I have two different methods to show you, which I will do by having step-by-step picture instructions for you to follow along. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!

HOW TO CROCHET IN THE ROUND METHOD 1

Begin with a slip knot and chain 4. Next, slip stitch into the first chain you made. This will form a loop. Depending on your project, either chain up 1, 2, or 3. For the purposes of this tutorial, let’s chain 2.

Next, you want to work your stitches into the loop you created. Let’s start with making 11 double crochets into the loop.

Once you’ve done this, slip stitch into the first double crochet you made. The chain 2 at the beginning doesn’t count as a stitch.

In order to make the circle bigger, you will need to increase stitches. If you don’t know how to increase stitches, please visit this Crochet 101 lesson. Chain 2, but do not turn your work. You will be working in the same direction for each round.

Make 2 double crochets into the first double crochet from the previous round. Remember that the chain 2 does not count as a stitch.

Continue making 2 double crochets into each stitch around and make a slip stitch into the first double crochet. Since you increased, you should now have a total of 22 double crochets in this round.

For round 3, you want to make your circle a little bigger. To achieve this, you want to make 2 double crochets into the first stitch and 1 double crochet into the next stitch.

Continue with 2 double crochets in next stitch followed by 1 double crochet in the next. You should end the round with 1 double crochet. Slip stitch into the first double crochet of the round. You should now have a total of 33 double crochets in this round.

Overall, to increase the size of your round, you want to make 2 double crochets in the first stitch and increase the amount of 1 double crochets in between the 2 double crochets.

Once you have your desired width, you want to stop increasing and simply make 1 double crochet into each stitch around until your desired length.

HOW TO CROCHET IN THE ROUND METHOD 2

Another alternative would be to make a magic circle. Check out my previous Crochet 101 lesson where I teach you how to make a magic circle.

Once you completed your magic circle, you would continue like you normally would to make your round, starting with 11 double crochets into the circle. Again, for the purposes of this tutorial, chain 2.

To refresh, round 2 would have 2 double crochets in each stitch around, round 3 would have 2 double crochets in the first stitch and 1 double crochet in the next, and so on.

Again, once you’re satisfied with the width of your round, you want to stop increasing and simply work 1 double crochet into each stitch around until you’re happy with the length.
