Hey everybody! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to change colors. This is a great way to create your own unique crochet item. If you’re making a crochet item for someone, you can use their favorite colors to make it more personal and special. I’m sure they’ll love you for it. I’ll break this tutorial down so you know exactly how to change colors.  I will include step-by-step instructions on how to achieve this. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!

To begin, you will need two different colors of yarn. I started with 20 chains and used a double crochet stitch. If you don’t know how to make a double crochet, please check out my double crochet lesson. I made a few rows of my first color before deciding to switch colors.

When you get to the end of the row, begin working that last double crochet in the row as normal, but do not finish it. You should have two loops on your hook. Next, cut off a yarn tail of about 6 inches of your current color.

To change colors, wrap the new colored yarn around your hook making sure you have a good sized tail to weave in your ends later.

Pull the new color yarn through both loops on your hook. This will complete the final double crochet of that row. Chain 2 and turn your work.

You can now continue your next row working with this new color.

When weaving in your ends, you have two options. First, you could hold the yarn tails behind your work and continue crocheting along your row as you normally would. This would trap the yarn tails. Second, you could weave in your ends when you finish your project. Using a tapestry needle, weave each color into the stitches of the appropriate color to hide them.
