Today I’m going to talk about how to balance yarn spending. This might seem like a silly topic to talk about, especially if you’re a yarn hoarder like me, but I think it’s important to learn how to balance yarn spending before getting too overwhelmed.
Are you the type of person who purchases yarn just to buy it? Do you tend to purchase yarn when you’re having a bad day? If this sounds like you, read on to find out how to balance your yarn spending better.
YARN SALES
I know everyone, including myself, can get sucked into the allure of a good yarn sale. After all, this is the time to stock up and get the most bang for your buck. However, yarn sales don’t just happen once a year. If you miss this yarn sale, there will always be another one in the future. When it comes to yarn sales I always try to stop and think about what I really need. Check out where I typically purchase yarn here.
ORDERS
If you sell your finished items on Etsy or anywhere else online, you know that you have to have yarn on hand. This doesn’t mean you have to go crazy, however. You just need to remember to keep enough of that yarn on hand just in case you get an order and have to replenish it. Once you notice your stash getting smaller, go ahead and restock it a little. There are going to be the occasions where you get a custom order request and you don’t have that specific yarn on hand. It’s perfectly okay to buy that yarn for that specific project in order to complete the request.
FUTURE PROJECTS
When it comes to purchasing yarn, I try and have a project in mind. I’ve been known to just purchase yarn because it’s pretty. However, I’m trying to get better with that and only purchase more yarn if I have a specific project in mind. If I know I need yarn for a blanket I’m working on, I’ll only get enough for that project. If I’m working on a hat, I’ll pick up a few different colors to see what the hat looks like in different colors. I think if you focus on the project you want to make, it will make it a little easier to focus on what yarn you actually need.
I know it can be tempting to buy all the yarn, but sometimes if you’re on a budget like I am, you have to be smart about how to balance yarn spending.
