Hooded CAL Blanket Part 2

Hi everyone and welcome back to Part 2 of my hooded CAL blanket! Last week I shared with you the supplies needed and blanket portion of my first CAL. You can check out Part 1 here. This week, we’re going to begin making the dog’s facial features and spots. If you aren’t making the Dalmatian version like I am, simply skip the spots portion.

For this section, you will need black yarn (I’m using Red Heart with Love), a little bit of brown (I’m using Red Heart Super Saver), a tiny amount of red (I’m using Red Heart with Love), and white (I’m using Red Heart with Love). You will also need a size J-10 crochet hook (I’m using Clover Amour). Gather your supplies and let’s begin!

DALMATIAN SPOTS-

Small Spot (Make 10): Magic ring or chain 4 and join to form a ring.

Round 1: Chain 2 and make 11 dc in the ring. Join and chain 2. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Big Spot (Make 7): Magic ring or chain 4 and join to form a ring.

Round 1: Chain 2 and make 11 dc in the ring. Join and chain 2.

Round 2: 2 dc in each stitch around. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

FACIAL FEATURES-

Eyes (Make 2): Beginning with brown, magic ring or chain 4 and join to form a ring.

Round 1: Make 6 sc in ring, fasten off and attach black yarn. Chain 1.

Round 2: Make 2 sc in each stitch around. Join and fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Nose: With black, chain 5

Row 1: Make a sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 2: Sc in each stitch across. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 3: Make a sc decrease 2x, continue to sc around the edges of the nose. Make 2 sc in the corners. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Tongue: Using red, chain 4

Row 1: Make a hdc and dc in 2nd chain from hook. Next, make a dc in next stitch and a dc and sc in the final stitch. Sc along the other side of the chain. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Cheeks (make 2): Using white, magic ring or chain 4 and join to form ring

Round 1: Make 5 sc in ring. You will be working in a continuous round.

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around (10 sc)

Round 3: *Make 2 sc in 1st stitch, 1 sc in the next. Repeat from * around (15 sc)

Round 4: *2 sc in 1st stitch, 1 sc in the next 2 stitches. Repeat from * around (20 sc)

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Ears (make 2):

(Note: I make 4 total ears and sewed them together to make them sturdier. However, you can make 2 ears and it would be just fine)

Row 1: Using black, chain 6. Make a hdc in 2nd chain from and in each chain across. Chain 1 and turn.

Rows 2-3: Make 1 hdc in each stitch across. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 4: Make 2 hdc in 1st stitch, 1 hdc in the next 3 stitches, and 2 hdc in the final stitch. Chain 1 and turn.

Rows 5-9: 1 hdc in each stitch across. Chain 1 and turn. At the end of row 9, continue to sc around the edge of the ear for a nice clean look. Join to close the round and fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

*If you’re making a sturdier ear, line up 2 of the ears with the right side facing out. Sew them together using the whip stitch method. Be sure to leave a long tail for sewing.

That completes Part 2 of my hooded CAL blanket. Stay tuned next week when I give you the next clue on how to complete this adorable hooded blanket.
