Grit Stitch Hat

Hi everyone! Today I’m sharing with you my newest crochet pattern, the Grit Stitch Hat. This hat is made using the grit stitch, which uses the single crochet and double crochet stitches. This makes it beginner-friendly and quick to make. You can even pair up this hat to go with my Grit Stitch Baby Blanket!

For the Grit Stitch Hat, I chose a self-striping cotton yarn. I wanted something that would really show off this stitch definition. I ended up using Caron Cotton Cakes in Blush & Bloom. I’ve also included a handy hat sizing chart, so you can make this hat in a preemie size all the way up to a large adult sized hat.

However, you can use any worsted weight #4 yarn you’d like. You can even use a light-weight #3 or a bulky weight #5 yarn if you so choose. The hat starts out the same way for each size. You will just refer to the sizing chart to get the correct brim length and hat height. I also used a size I-9 crochet hook. My favorite crochet hooks to use are the Clover Amour. You will also need a pair of scissors, a measuring tape, and a tapestry needle. Gather your supplies and let’s begin!

Materials:

Size:

Refer to sizing chart below

Notes:

  • To change the width of your brim, you will simply make more chains.
  • For the brim, you will work into both loops for the first and last stitches and work in the back loop only for the middle stitches.
  • The chain 1 at the start of each row counts as a single crochet.
  • Whenever you see parenthesis, you will follow the instructions inside the parenthesis into the stitch indicated.

Grit Stitch Hat Pattern:

Starting with the brim, CH 8 (I am making the newborn-3 months size hat)

Row 1: In the 2nd CH from hook and in each CH across, SC. CH 1 and turn.

Row 2: In the first SC, make a SC in both loops. Make a SC in the BLO of the next 5 SC, SC in both loops of last SC. CH 1 and turn.

Repeat Row 2 until your brim measures 2 inches shorter than your head circumference (refer to sizing chart).

Once your brim is completed, you will SC the two ends together to form a circle. Flip your brim inside out so the seam is on the inside of your hat. Next, we will begin working on the height of the hat.

Hat Height:

Round 1: CH 1 and turn. Make a SC evenly around your hat. You need to have an even number of SC stitches before moving onto the next round (for my newborn hat I made 42 SC). CH 1 and turn.

Round 2: Make a DC into the very first stitch (CH 1 counts as a SC). *Skip next stitch and work (SC, DC) into the next stitch. Repeat from * around. SL ST to beginning, CH 1 and turn.

Round 3: Make a DC into the very first stitch. *Skip next stitch (DC from previous round) and work (SC, DC) into the next stitch (SC from previous round). Repeat from * around, SL ST to beginning stitch. CH 1 and turn.

Repeat Round 3 until your hat measures your desired hat height. If making the newborn-3 months size as I did, you will make about 13 rows or 5.5 inches tall.

When you’ve reached your desired height, you will leave a long tail to sew up the top of your hat. To do so, you will weave your tapestry needle in and out of the tops of the stitches. Next, pull gently until the top of your hat closes up. Weave in your tail so the hat stays shut. Fasten off.
