Hi everyone! Today I’m sharing with you my newest crochet pattern, the Easy Crochet Velvet Blanket. I have a bunch of velvet yarn in my stash, so I thought this would be the perfect beginner-friendly pattern. If you haven’t used velvet yarn before, you will be in for a treat as it’s super soft and luxurious.
Working with velvet yarn can be a little tricky as it’s a slippery yarn, but once you find the right stitch to use, you will be gliding along nicely. I made a velvet scarf using this same stitch, and it turned out beautifully without any of the stitches slipping out. The one tip I learned while working with velvet yarn is that you want to keep your tension a little tighter than normal. This helps prevent your work from unraveling. If you find that your stitches keep coming loose, I would recommend going down a hook size.
For the Easy Crochet Velvet Blanket, I chose a self-striping bulky weight velvet yarn. However, you can use another velvet yarn if you’d like. I also used a size K-6.5mm crochet hook. My favorite crochet hooks to use are the Clover Amour. You will also need a pair of scissors and a tapestry needle. Gather your supplies and let’s begin!
Easy Crochet Velvet Blanket
Materials:
- 3 cakes of Bernat Velvet Stripes (I used the color Sharkskin)
- K-6.5mm crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
Size:
37 wide x 40 long
Notes:
- To change the width of this blanket, you will chain any number of chains you would like.
- You can use any velvet yarn you’d like. Your blanket may turn out different than mine depending on what velvet yarn you use.

Easy Crochet Velvet Blanket Pattern:
Chain 80 (or any number)
Row 1: In the 3rd CH from hook, work a HDC. Work a HDC into each CH across. CH 2 and turn.
Row 2: Insert your hook under all the loops the HDC made and to the left of the stitch post (you will be working in between the posts of the HDC). Work a HDC in between the posts all the way across your row. When you get to the end, make sure your last HDC is in between the last post and the CH 2 turning CH. CH 2 and turn.
Repeat Row 2 until the blanket measures about 35 inches or your desired length. Weave in any ends with a tapestry needle before moving onto border.
BORDER:
Round 1: CH 2, work a DC in each stitch around, making 3 DC in each corner stitch. SL ST to beginning DC. CH 2 (do not turn).
Round 2: Make a FPDC around the first DC. Make a BPDC around the next DC. Alternate FPDC and BPDC around entire blanket. SL ST to beginning stitch. CH 2 (do not turn).
Round 3: Work a FPDC around the FPDC from the previous row and a BPDC around the BPDC from the previous row. You want to continue working this ribbed pattern around the entire blanket. SL ST to beginning stitch. Cut yarn and weave in ends.
