Hi everyone! Today I’m sharing my newest crochet pattern, the Delicate Shell Baby Blanket. This super soft, handmade baby blanket is crocheted in a shell pattern and has a wonderful texture. It is the perfect baby afghan for a newborn baby and would also be an excellent baby shower gift that would be treasured for years to come.
For the Delicate Shell Baby Blanket, I used Premier Basix DK. However, you can use whatever lightweight #3 weight yarn you’d like. I also used a size K-10.5 (6.5mm) crochet hook. I highly recommend using my favorite crochet hooks, Clover Amour. You will also need a tapestry needle and a pair of scissors. Gather your supplies and let’s begin!

Notes:
- This blanket is worked in a multiple of 6 plus 2. This means you will multiple any number by 6 to get your desired width. Once satisfied, you will add 2 chains to the very end to keep everything in balance.
- Chain stitches never count as stitches.
- Shell stitches consists of 5 double crochets worked into the same stitch.
- For the border, you will turn your work after each round.

CH 104
Row 1: SC in 2nd CH and in each CH across. CH 1 and turn (103 stitches)
Row 2: SC in first stitch, *skip the next 2 stitches, make a shell into the next stitch, skip the next 2 stitches and SC in the next. Repeat from * across to the end of your blanket. CH 2 and turn (17 shells + 18 SC = 103 stitches)
Row 3: 3 DC in first stitch, skip 2 stitches and make a SC in the next stitch (middle stitch of the shell), skip the next 2 stitches. *In the next stitch (single crochet from previous row), make a shell, skip the next 2 stitches, SC in the next stitch, skip the next 2 stitches. Repeat from * across to the end of your blanket. In the last stitch, make 3 DC. CH 1 and turn. (16 shells + 17 SC + 6 DC (beginning and end of blanket) =103 stitches)
Row 4: SC in first stitch, skip the next 2 stitches, in the next stitch, make a shell, skip the next 2 stitches and in the stitch after that, make a SC. *Skip the next 2 stitches, make a shell into the next stitch, skip 2 stitches, and SC into the next stitch. Repeat from * across to the end of your blanket. CH 2 and turn. (17 shells + 18 SC = 103 stitches)
Rows 5-76: Repeat Rows 3 and 4 for the pattern or until your desired height. Make sure you end on a Row 4 row. Your blanket should be about 34″ high before making the border. Do not fasten off.
Border
Round 1: CH 1 and turn.
TOP: 3 SC into the corner space (first corner made), SC in each stitch across until you have 1 stitch remaining, 3 SC into the last stitch (second corner made)
SIDES: SC evenly all the way across. (Note: at the end of each row, there’s a DC followed by a SC/CH 1 that you will work into. When working into the DC, I made a SC into the top of the DC and a SC into the bottom of that same DC stitch. There isn’t an exact stitch count as the goal is to have evenly placed stitches along the sides of your blanket).
BOTTOM: 3 SC in the corner space (third corner made), SC in each stitch across, 3 SC into the last stitch (fourth corner made). SL ST into the first SC made to join. CH 1 and turn.
Round 2: SC in each stitch around, making 3 SC in each corner stitch (middle SC of the 3 SC made). SL ST to join. CH 1 and turn.
Rounds 3-5: Repeat Round 2
Round 6: SL ST into the first stitch, *skip the next stitch, in the next stitch make a shell, skip the next stitch, SL ST into the next stitch. Repeat from * around the entire blanket. (Nothing special happens for the corner stitches). SL ST to beginning to join. Fasten off and weave in ends.
