Hey everyone! Spring is officially here! I decided to review this cute Chicken Towel Topper as I’m making a few for an upcoming spring craft fair. This Chicken Towel Topper was part of a booklet full of wonderful towel topper designs. You can purchase the booklet here.
For this Chicken Towel Topper, I modified the pattern a little to fit my needs. I really like the results as this is an easy pattern that you can create in less than a day. All you need is a little bit of yarn, a button, and a towel and you’re all set!
For this pattern, I used Red Heart Super Saver in bright yellow and a tiny bit of Red Heart Super Saver in black and pumpkin. You can check out my review of this yarn here. I also used a size G-6 crochet hook. The hook I used is a Clover Amour hook. You can check out my review here. You will also need one 3/4 inch button and a tapestry needle. Finally, you’ll need a spring/Easter towel. Let’s move onto the review!
CHICKEN TOWEL TOPPER REVIEW
This pattern was originally written by Michele Wilcox. She did a great job in detailing all the steps needed in order to make this cute chicken towel topper. Advanced beginners will be able to follow the pattern if they work slowly and know how to increase and decrease stitches. I’m sure this towel topper would look adorable in a variety of colors (pastel colors for spring anyone?), but I wanted to make all of mine yellow.
PATTERN ADJUSTMENTS
As I mentioned above, I did modify this chicken towel topper pattern to fit my needs. I decided to skip the skirt and go directly into making the chicken. I also decided to not make the head piece. You will need to make two chickens in order to sew them together.
Before sewing them together, I sewed the chicken’s face onto one of the body pieces. I also kept the bottom open in order for me to sew a hanging loop underneath. I really like the idea of having a hanging loop as you can interchange the towels to your desire.
To make the hanging loop, you will need to change 26. You will then make a single crochet in the 2nd chain from your hook and in each stitch across. Leave a long tail for sewing. Next, you will sew the hanging loop underneath where you left the bottom open on both sides of your chicken towel topper. Once you sew the hanging loop on, you will weave in all your ends and fasten off. You will then be able to insert your towel over the loop.
MORE PATTERN ADJUSTMENTS
Finally, I made another hanging loop in order for the chicken towel topper to hang from your oven door. In order to make this, you will need to chain 6. Next, make 1 single crochet into each stitch across for 5 total single crochets. Chain 1 and turn your work. You will make a total of 24 rows. After that, you will make 1 single crochet in the first two stitches, chain 1 and skip the next stitch (button loop), and single crochet in the final two stitches. You will chain 1 and turn. For the final row, you will make a single crochet in each stitch across including the chain 1 from the previous row. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
You will sew this onto the back of the chicken’s head like in the picture below:
Using the same color yarn as your chicken, you will sew the button onto the back of one of the chicken bodies.
