Blanket Stitch Hat

Hi everyone! Today I’m sharing with you my newest crochet pattern, the Blanket Stitch Hat. This hat is made using the blanket stitch, which uses the single crochet and double crochet stitches. This makes it beginner-friendly and quick to make.

For the Blanket Stitch Hat, I used Premier Anti-Pilling worsted weight yarn. If you’re making a smaller sized hat, you can get a few hats out of one skein of yarn. I’ve also included a handy hat sizing chart, so you can make this hat in a preemie size all the way up to a large adult sized hat.

However, you can use any worsted weight #4 yarn you’d like. You can even use a light-weight #3 or a bulky weight #5 yarn if you so choose. The hat starts out the same way for each size. You will just refer to the sizing chart to get the correct brim length and hat height. I also used a size I-9 crochet hook. My favorite crochet hooks to use are the Clover Amour. You will also need a pair of scissors, a measuring tape, and a tapestry needle. Gather your supplies and let’s begin!

Notes:

  • To change the width of your brim, you will simply make more chains.
  • For the brim, you will work into both loops for the first and last stitches and work in the back loop only for the middle stitches.
  • Your brim and first single crochet round need to be in a multiple of 3.

Blanket Stitch Hat Pattern:

Starting with the brim, CH 8 (I am making the newborn-3 months size hat)

Row 1: In the 2nd CH from hook and in each CH across, SC. CH 1 and turn.

Row 2: In the first SC, make a SC in both loops. Make a SC in the BLO of the next 5 SC, SC in both loops of last SC. CH 1 and turn.

Repeat Row 2 until your brim measures 2 inches shorter than your head circumference (refer to sizing chart).

Once your brim is completed, you will SC the two ends together to form a circle. Flip your brim inside out so the seam is on the inside of your hat. Next, we will begin working on the height of the hat.

Hat Height:

Round 1: CH 1 and turn. Make a SC evenly around your hat. You need to have a multiple of 3 before moving onto the next round (for my newborn hat I made 39 SC). CH 2 and do not turn.

Round 2: 2 DC in first stitch, *skip 2, (SC, 2 DC) in next stitch. Repeat from * around until you have 3 stitches left. Skip 2 and SC in last stitch. CH 2, do not turn.

Repeat Round 2 until your hat measures your desired hat height. If making the newborn-3 months size as I did, you will continue until 5.5 inches tall.

When you’ve reached your desired height, you will leave a long tail to sew up the top of your hat. To do so, you will weave your tapestry needle in and out of the tops of the stitches. Next, pull gently until the top of your hat closes up. Weave in your tail so the hat stays shut. Fasten off.
