Hey everyone! Today I’ll be sharing with you my back loop hot pad pattern as part of my Crochet 101 series. This free pattern will help you learn how to make a single crochet in the back loop only while also completing a beginner project. The completed back loop hot pad is approximately 9×9. Follow along with my step-by-step instructions and soon you will have your very own hot pad!
Please read below for the written pattern. For a beginner, I recommend sticking to a solid color cotton yarn for now until you get more practice. Using a solid color will help you see the stitches better. However, if you feel ready, go ahead and try a variegated color. The great thing about this back loop hot pad pattern is that you can use any color you would like.
BACK LOOP HOT PAD PATTERN
Materials:
- H-8 crochet hook (I used Clover Amour)
- Cotton yarn in any color (I used Peaches and Crème)
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
Finished Size:
Approx. 9×9 square
Pattern:
Ch 30.
ROW 1: Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1 and turn (29 sc)
ROW 2: Work 1 sc in back loop only of each sc across. Ch 1 and turn (29 sc)
ROW 3-up: Continue working 1 sc in the back loop only of each sc across until your work measures approximately 9 inches long.
BORDER:
RND 1: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each stitch around hot pad making sure to work 3 sc in each corner. Sl st to the beginning of the round.
RND 2: Work 1 sl st in each sc around, ending 1 sc before the last corner. Make a hanging loop in the last corner: Ch 10, skip 3 sc in the corner stitch, and skip next sc. Attach loop into next sl st with a sl st.
To Finish: Leave at least 6 inches for your tail. Cut yarn. Yarn over your hook and pull through the last stitch of your row and tighten. To weave in all yarn ends, thread your yarn in your tapestry needle and go in between the stitches one way and back the other way. This will help keep your project from coming apart.
You now have your very own back loop hot pad! These make great gifts for family members, friends, or even yourself. Make a couple to protect your surfaces from hot pots and pans.
