Hey everyone! Today’s book review is on 350 Crochet Tips, Techniques, and Trade Secrets by Jan Eaton. My library purchased this book for our library collection, so when I noticed it, I knew I had to check it out! I’m always looking for different tips and tricks. Even though I’ve been crocheting for a number of years, there is always something new to learn in order to improve my skills.

350 Crochet Tips, Techniques, and Trade Secrets is filled with a TON of information. At the beginning of the book, you have different crochet hooks and yarns, so if you wanted to substitute a yarn for a project, you have this information here. You might be surprised at how many different types of crochet hooks and yarn there is out there. This can come in handy especially if the yarn listed in the pattern isn’t available in your area.

Next, you will learn how to read a crochet pattern, learn what those different symbols mean, and how to mix and match different stitch patterns. You will also learn about gauge, which is necessary for making certain garments. If you have ever thought about designing your own crochet garments, you will want to pay attention to chapter 3 of this book. When designing these types of items, there is so much to learn, such as how to get the right fit or drape.

Next, you have step-by-step instructions on how to do the basic stitches as well as filet stitches. You also have guidance on how to adapt patterns to get the size you’re looking for. This book provides step-by-step photos, diagrams, and clear instructions that will help guide you through the entire process of your item. Another fun extra to this book is how to add a special touch to your work using beaded embellishments as well as surface crochet.

Finally, there is a section that talks about color. This is something I still struggle with, as I never know what colors would work well together. This book provides some instruction on how to group colors together by providing a color chart. Have you ever wanted to learn how to dye yarn? You’ll learn the basics you need to start yarn dyeing. At the end of the book, you have a resource section, which includes a basic size chart, crochet symbol meanings, standard washing instructions, and categories of different yarn weights.

I enjoyed reading 350 Crochet Tips, Techniques, and Trade Secrets because it was very insightful and had some good tips that I wasn’t aware of before reading this book. I especially enjoyed the sections about designing garments and working with colors. The organization of this book is amazing. Everything seemed to flow nicely, and the added pictures clearly explained the different techniques as mentioned. I also like that the author explained the stitch in writing, provided a picture, and included a chart. This would help any crocheter out! Overall, I would recommend checking this book out and becoming inspired.
